# policy

> Reference for relai policy.

`relai policy` manages RELAI's shared proactive workflow policy in existing
repository-root instruction files.

```sh theme={"system"}
relai policy install
```

`install` updates the complete RELAI-managed block in regular root `AGENTS.md`
and `CLAUDE.md` files when they exist. It skips symlinks without following
them, never creates instruction files, and never changes nested instruction
files. Both commands fail if no regular root instruction file exists. Before
writing, it validates every target; malformed or duplicate managed markers
leave every file unchanged.

```sh theme={"system"}
relai policy remove
```

`remove` deletes only RELAI's complete managed block and its clearly owned
separator. It never deletes an instruction file. Both commands are safe to run
again: install keeps the current managed policy current, and remove succeeds
when no managed block is present.

When an instruction file originally had no final newline, install and a file
that originally had one final newline become indistinguishable. In that case,
remove preserves one final newline rather than risking removal of user-owned
whitespace.
